Fall 2004 Wind Workshop Series
October 16
October 18 - 21
An Emerging Technology
Wind Power is more readily available today than ever before as an option for electricity production.
In fact, wind is the world's fastest growing source of energy as citizens
continue to seek clean, affordable, and reliable ways to meet everyday energy
needs. Smallscale wind technologies, cousins to utility sized turbines,
come in many shapes and sizes and are increasingly sought after
for a variety of applications including home power production, farm and ranch use, and remote
power. They are reliable, versatile, easy to install and operate.
The NC Small Wind Initiative (SWI) is dedicated to introducing the region to small-wind technology as an option for home-grown, clean, and secure energy. In conjunction with the new Research and Demonstration site on Beech Mountain, the NC SWI is proud to host the 2004 Fall Workshop series to emPOWER groups and individuals with the tools and resources to pursue small wind for energy independence. We have partnered with state and national leaders to bring you the most comprehensive educational and hands-on experience possible.
Please join us for these exciting workshops in the most beautiful season in the NC Mountains.
NC Small Wind Initiative Workshop Series:
An Introduction to Small Wind Power
with Jim Green of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory's (NREL) National Wind Technology Center
Saturday, September 25th from 9am-5pm
Also offered on Saturday October 16th from 9am- 5pm at Appalachian State University Department of Technology, Kerr Scott Hall, Boone, NC
.This one-day introductory workshop, offered twice this fall, will provide a comprehensive overview of small wind technologies, system designs and applications. This workshop will enable you to further explore wind energy with a base of information including:
- How wind turbines work
- Technology Overview and Available Products
- Estimating Annual Energy Output
- Costs and Paybacks
- Utility Interconnection
- Case Studies
Jim Green is a Senior Project Leader at NREL where he has been working since 1978. His contributions to the national wind community include his participation with the National Wind Technology Center and the Department of Energy's Wind Powering American Program. Mr. Green is qualified as a General and Professional Engineer and is a member if the IEEE and the Colorado Renewable Energy Society. With NREL, he currently manages turbine development subcontracts with small wind turbine manufacturers, which strive to develop new, more cost-effective small wind turbines. www.nrel.gov
AWP 3.6 Hands-On Wind Turbine
Installation Workshop
"Strong as an elephant, not quite as heavy"
With Robert Preus, owner of Abundant Renewable Energy.
Monday, September 27th thru Friday, October 1st
at the Small Wind Initiative Research and Demonstration Facility on Beech Mountain. This 5-day hands-on workshop will showcase the African Wind Power (AWP) 3.6 turbine, suitable for low to moderate wind sites with an 11.8-foot rotor diameter. The indepth installation workshop will demonstrate turbine erection, siting and interconnection practices. Tower safety, troubleshooting, and turbine maintenance will present a more detailed look at wind energy systems.
Robert Preus is a renewable energy consultant and licensed mechanical engineer with 20 years in the wind industry. His company, Abundant Renewable Energy, is the exclusive North American importer and distributor of African Wind Power Products, an exception- ally durable and reliable line of small wind generators. Mr. Preus's company rebuilds old Jacobs wind generators and also serves the wind industry with tower manufacturing and the current design work of a 9-meter diameter wind generator under a Department of Energy grant. www.abundantre.com
Southwest Wind Power H40 & 175 Hands-On Wind Turbine Installation Workshop
"Serious power production for an entire home"With Southwest Wind Power's Josh Levinson and Jay Yeager
Monday, October 18th thru
Thursday, October 21st.
at the Small Wind Initiative Research and Demonstration Facility
on Beech Mountain.
This 4-day hands-on workshop is truly a unique opportunity for attendees to install TWO wind turbines: Whisper H40, with its patented side-furling Angle-Governor for high winds, and the Whisper 175, unique with its two-blade turbine design and 14-foot diameter. This turbine installation workshop also offers extensive materials and instruction on tower raising, maintenance, and interconnection. www.windenergy.com
Driven by a deep and abiding commitment to the environment Southwest Windpower continues to design, manufacture and sell state-of-the-art wind energy systems of high-quality, durability and affordability.
Josh Levinson is Southwest Windpower'ss North American Sales Director.
Jay Yeager is the Technical Services manager for Southwest Wind Power. Throughout the years he has analyzed literally thousands of applications and participated in numerous installations of SWWP products both for field-testing and consumer use.
Costs:
Workshop costs include lunch for each day of attendance as well as materials, including a complete notebook collection of reading and design materials, references, and wind turbine product information.
Attendees will also receive the Department of Energy's newly published "North Carolina Small Wind Electric Systems Handbook," and the new, interactive NC Wind Resource Map CD. This map allows the viewer to get comprehensive wind data for any spot in NC.
